As I drove nearly 2 hours to Buena Vista, CO. Note to self: Don't only look at the website of a place you want to visit - check Trip Advisor first. The area was also known for its beauty, so why not this hot springs? So I checked their website, and the site looked really lovely. I had beautiful rustic experiences in Costa Rica. I had heard that the facility was "rustic." In a mountainous atmosphere, rustic can still be a suitable term. This place would have only received a drive-by and not a stop-in. It was recommended by a person who obviously did not know me very well. I visited Cottonwood Hot Springs for the day. I definitely won't be back until this place is under new ownership and new management. I have been told this hot springs is being bought out. Although I adore the private pool that comes with the cabins, I could have gotten much cleaner rooms and better service at a motel. I am shocked we were charged almost $300 a night for this kind of experience. Then, to top it all off, we overheard the owner complaining about and mocking the guests. But, they were thankfully able to finally remove the ice in the main thoroughfare. On day 3, the public restrooms (for the main pools) went out for the remainder of our time there, with no idea when they would be repaired. Additionally, the main thoroughfare was left a sheet of ice for two days (making it dangerous to go to the office or the main pools), and the path to our cabin's private tub iced over, causing me to fall. When we went back to complain about this again, we were told (by a different employee) that the mice droppings are common here and that they couldn't fix the coffee pot. The next day, we discovered the coffee pot was non-functional (missing lid), we found more mouse droppings under the bathroom sink, and there were new mouse droppings in the silverware drawer. When we spoke to management, they immediately apologized, fixed these issues, and gave us a 1 day refund (out of the 3 nights' reservation). As soon as we checked in, we discovered that there were mouse droppings in and around the oven and in the silverware drawer (even touching some of the utensils), there was no water in the bathroom (due to frozen pipes), and the heater wasn't even working in one room. I rented one of the cabins with a friend over President's Day weekend, and we were disappointed and shocked at what we experienced. While most the staff is responsive and kind, the place has become rundown and radiates neglect. And while the water itself is still one of my favorites, the rest of the place is clearly neglected. I have been going to Cottonwood Hot Springs for over 15 years. If you don't mind a basic place to crash for the night then the rooms will suffice but if you are looking for something similar to a typical chain hotel room this will disappoint you. They really mean it when they say they don't give refunds so do your research before you decide to stay here. The towels were not soft or clean, they were almost crunchy and the type that would come from a second hand store. There was some kind of substance sprayed but not wiped on the only table and then they had the audacity to leave a tip envelope for cleaning but the room didn't seem to be clean. There's a shower with a plastic curtain, no tub. The room did smell and it was poorly lit. They had the heat running for the snow they were expecting and had a sign that said if your room gets too hot open a window. The bedding is dingy and there were crumbs on the floor. The room is small, very basic, no tv, no dresser, no hooks, no internet, no mini fridge and no microwave. ![]() I hadn't stayed in the rooms until recently. The temperature of the pools vary and sure there's hair and floaties but that comes with the territory of natural hot springs. I have been coming to Cottonwood Hot Springs for 15 years and recently I booked a room for myself and two family members. Unfortunately the quality of this place keeps getting worse.
